How to Choose a WiFi Irrigation Controller

A WiFi irrigation controller does exactly one thing: decide when to open and close the valves in your system. But between a $40 model and a $150 one, there are differences that genuinely matter — and others that are pure marketing. This guide focuses on the ones that matter.

1. Number of zones — think ahead, not just about today

Most homes need somewhere between 4 and 8 zones. If you buy exactly what you need today, you'll come up short the moment you add a garden bed or a second drip circuit. Rule of thumb: buy 2 more zones than you're currently using.

2. Does it depend on the cloud, or does it run locally?

This is the least-explained thing in product descriptions, and the one that causes the most trouble down the road. There are two models:

  • Cloud-dependent: the controller needs the internet and the manufacturer's servers to function, even to run a schedule that's already been programmed. If the manufacturer shuts down the service (it has happened with several brands) or your internet goes down, watering stops.
  • Local-first: the schedule lives on the device itself. The app and the cloud are only used to configure or monitor it remotely, but watering keeps running even if the WiFi drops.

If the manufacturer doesn't explicitly say how it behaves without internet, assume it's cloud-dependent.

3. Compatibility with external sensors

A good controller should be able to receive a signal from a rain sensor or a soil moisture sensor and skip watering automatically when it isn't needed. Check whether the model has a physical sensor input (not just app-based integration with sensors from the same brand) — that gives you the freedom to use cheaper or generic sensors later.

4. Communication protocol

Most are plain WiFi, which works fine if the controller sits close to the router. If you're installing it in a shed or a far corner of the yard, look for models with a range-extension option (a repeater included) or that support a lower-power protocol like Zigbee via a hub — though that's less common in irrigation controllers than in the rest of home automation.

5. What happens if the manufacturer disappears

It's an uncomfortable but valid question: if the company behind the controller shuts down, does the device still work? Local-first models almost always keep functioning as a basic timer. Cloud-dependent ones can become completely useless — literally bricks with valves attached.

The bottom line

Before you even look at price, check: how many zones you actually need (plus a margin), whether it works without relying on external servers, whether it accepts external sensors through a physical input, and how far you'll be installing it from the router. Those four factors predict long-term satisfaction far better than any list of app features.

If you only need to solve a trip, not the whole yard

You don't always need a full WiFi controller.
