Quick Guide to Solenoid Valves for Residential Irrigation

The solenoid valve is the part that actually opens and closes the water flow — the controller just sends it the electrical signal. If the valve is the wrong choice or badly installed, no controller, no matter how smart, can make up for that. Here's what to check before buying.

Voltage: 24V AC is the standard

Almost every residential irrigation controller, traditional or WiFi, runs on 24V AC (alternating current, not direct). Before buying a valve, confirm your controller supplies that voltage — it's true for the vast majority of models, but it's worth verifying on the spec sheet, especially if you're mixing components from different manufacturers or building your own system with relays.

Normally closed (NC) vs. normally open (NO)

  • Normally closed: with no power, the valve stays closed (no water flows). This is the standard configuration for irrigation — it only opens when the controller sends the signal. If there's a power outage, the system simply doesn't water, which is the safe failure mode.
  • Normally open: with no power, the valve stays open. Used in very specific applications where you want flow to pass by default and be cut off by an active signal. Rarely what you need for home irrigation.

If the product listing doesn't specify, it's almost certainly normally closed — but confirm it, because installing the wrong type means your system waters constantly except when you actually want it to.

In-line (buried) vs. anti-siphon (above ground) valves

There are two physical ways to install a solenoid valve, and they're not interchangeable:

  • In-line: buried underground, connected directly to the underground piping. This is the most common type in residential multi-zone systems.
  • Anti-siphon: installs above ground level, usually screwed directly onto a spigot, with a built-in vacuum breaker. In many areas it's required by code when the valve sits near a potable water source, because it keeps irrigation water (carrying dirt or fertilizer) from siphoning back into the household water supply.

If your install is going underground, you need an in-line valve. If it connects directly onto a spigot or sits near a potable water source, check your local code — you'll likely need an anti-siphon valve.

Thread size: 3/4" is the most common

Most residential irrigation kits use 3/4-inch valves. If your main line is 1 inch, valves in that size exist, but they're less common in the budget price range. Measure your piping before buying — don't assume.

Most common installation mistakes

  1. Installing the valve backwards: almost all of them have an arrow on the body indicating flow direction. Installing it backwards can keep it from closing properly, or stop it from working at all.
  2. Skipping a valve box: leaving valves exposed to the weather without protection speeds up wear on the solenoid and the electrical connections, especially in humid climates like Florida's.
  3. Unsealed electrical connections: most valve failures aren't mechanical — they're electrical, from moisture getting into the wire splice. Use waterproof connectors (the sealed gel-filled "wire nuts" type), no exceptions.
  4. Skipping a check valve on sloped terrain: if your system has zones lower than others, water can keep draining downhill by gravity after the valve closes, causing pooling at the lowest sprinkler head.
